Architecture 00 + Studio Weave’s has won approval to revamp Finsbury Circus Gardens and create a ‘biodiverse’ square on the edge of London’s Square Mile. Working with Reardon Smith Landscape their proposal was chosen by the City of London Corporation to restore and rethink the Grade II-listed 2.2ha green space following a competition in late 2020.
The project aims to restore the 2,200m² circus and its gardens and create a ‘creative and sustainable’ multifunctional public space with pavilion.
The designs for the square, which dates back to 1606 and remains the largest park in the City, were approved by the City of London Corporation’s planning and transportation committee in early March.
The scheme includes an ‘urban forest’ skirted by a new oval-shaped pathway as well as a new parks office and a 100-capacity, open-fronted pavilion café. The scheme retains the garden’s Grade II-listed drinking fountain, dating back to 1902.
