Apprentice of the Year The IOC Rainleaf Trophy
Recognising outstanding apprentices in carpentry, joinery and shopfitting – at any stage of their apprenticeship, nominated by their college or employer.
An award for today’s apprentices
The Apprentice of the Year Award replaces our 3rd Year Student Award, which was built around a fixed three-year college route.
Modern apprenticeships run on different timelines, and apprentices are shaped on site as much as in the classroom. So for the first time, employers can nominate apprentices directly, as well as colleges.
- Third-year students only
- Nominated by colleges
- Apprentices at any stage
- Nominated by colleges, employers or both
Who can take part?
Any apprentice, any stage
Any apprentice currently enrolled on a recognised carpentry, joinery or shopfitting/interior contracting apprenticeship.
Colleges and employers
Nominations can come from a college, an employer, or both together – whoever knows the apprentice’s work best.

Every nomination is assessed against the same five criteria.
