Government Funding Update: Financial Incentives for Carpentry & Joinery Employers

Institute of Carpenters Posted on 09/04/2026 by Joe Harris09/04/2026

The UK Government has updated the financial incentives available to employers who provide training and work opportunities for young people. For Institute of Carpenters (IOC) members, these pathways offer a strategic way to bring fresh talent into the workshop or onto the site without the immediate administrative commitment of a full apprenticeship.

Incentives at a Glance

Programme Type Requirements Incentive Payment
T-Level Industry Placement 16–19 year olds; minimum 315 hours £1,000 per placement
Work Experience 16–18 year olds; minimum 70 hours £1,000 per student
Apprenticeships 16–18 (or 19–24 with EHC plan) £1,000 (paid in two instalments)
Sector-Based Work Academies (SWAP) 16+; includes pre-employment training Up to £1,000 for employer costs

Key Opportunities for IOC Members

For carpentry and joinery firms looking to build a talent pool with lower overheads, the T-Level and Work Experience routes offer a “try-before-you-buy” approach. This allows you to assess a young person’s aptitude for the craft and their fit within your team while receiving a direct £1,000 incentive.

Additionally, Sector-Based Work Academies (SWAP) help you recruit individuals who have already completed basic pre-employment training tailored to the industry. Funding is available to help cover your costs during the recruitment and onboarding process.
