A graceful, sustainable pedestrian and cycle bridge in Balingen, southern Germany is supported on two massive engineered timber beams that span a continuous 40m stretch over the River Eyach with no intermediate pillars.
Part of a wider project to regenerate the river, the structure was designed by UK-based Moxon Architects in collaboration with German timber bridge engineering specialist Ingenieurbüro Miebach. It uses glulam beams to form two parapet sides up to railing level, separated by a steel U-frame cross-beam structure that prevents the beams from tipping outwards.
