The Institute of Carpenters (IOC) is proud to recognise the outstanding talent of this year’s 3rd Year Student Award winners and Highly Commended recipients. These students represent the future of carpentry and joinery, demonstrating exceptional skill, dedication, and craftsmanship.
A special congratulations goes to Luke Jackson, one of three students awarded a Highly Commended Certificate and prizes in recognition of his hard work and passion for the trade.
Recognising Excellence in Carpentry
Speaking about the significance of the competition, Geoff Rhodes, President of the IOC, said: “We started the competition in 2020 to celebrate the very best of the best. This year’s standard was exceptional, with entries from 55 IOC member colleges. Ryan stood out through his attitude, his skill of the craft, and the glowing tributes from those he has worked with.”
The awards not only celebrate individual achievements but also highlight the importance of nurturing talent within the industry.
Closing the Skills Gap
Geoff Rhodes also emphasised the pressing need for more skilled professionals in the woodworking sector: “There are 15,000 more carpenters and joiners needed in the next five years to address the UK’s woodworking skill gap. Building strong relationships with colleges is vital, as is connecting the timber industry and other trade associations into this work.”
The IOC remains committed to supporting apprentices and students, ensuring that future generations of carpenters and joiners continue to uphold the highest standards of craftsmanship.
Congratulations once again to Luke and all the students who took part in this year’s competition!
